A lot of the performance is due to the way the game actually generates walls for rendering. That said, it suffers from very poor framerate directly due to these limitations - even after Jim Blackler optimized the hell out of the rendering engine using unrolled loops to draw the walls to try and speed up performance. The game is impressive despite the limitations of 64K VRAM / 64K RAM and 64 on screen colors. I think that’s probably true.īloodshot is definitely something worth playing, albeit much simpler than Doom as an example. There’s also some prototypes of the first game out and about that are hard to find where some of the art is a bit different.Īlso, it is rumored the Brazilian Duke 3D port uses the same engine as Zero Tolerance.

A ROM exists online for it though, but it’s still an early prototype. Zero Tolerance actually did have a planned sequel but it was cancelled early in development. Bloodshot is a bit less like Doom, not really too much like Wolf 3D either, but is closer to that sort of feeling in my opinion.Įither game is deserving of some sort of comeback. In short, I’d say Zero Tolerance is the Sega Genesis’s attempt at a Doom clone. This game feels a bit slower paced and more about survival in a way. You can choose from a few different characters and it has a decent arsenal of weapons. It feels like it should’ve been made for PC too, though.

It’s truly impressive just how much content is in this game. Zero Tolerance reminds me of Blake Stone but a bit more advanced in some ways. Kind of like a run and gun sort of feeling. It feels a bit like Wolfenstein except you’re fighting cyborgs/robots. The CD version has an amazing soundtrack that is worth listening to even outside of the game.

Bloodshot feels a bit simpler overall and easier to get into.
